![]() “ felt like you’re just reading one of the books, but the world was much bigger than that. We filled out the details, the empty spaces in our minds.” “And it helped to give us a better understanding of the entire world and maybe a better understanding of where the world should move onto for where we were going with it. “And so we started coming up with backstory,” Robyn adds. But we make that attempt to make it seem viable as far as worlds go.” It takes a lot of effort to tie the environment with the story and the puzzles. “We try so hard to create this consistent flow in our worlds. “I think in our minds, it does feel like we’re building worlds and not necessarily games,” says Rand of Cyan’s approach to making games. Games like The Witness, Outer Wilds, and Quern draw inspiration from Myst’s original puzzle-adventure formula, while Dear Esther, Gone Home, and The Stanley Parable are heavily influenced by the world-building and environmental storytelling Myst pioneered. Myst is responsible for a wave of cinematic, immersive games with rich storytelling that are as popular in 2020 as they ever were. ![]() ![]() The Matrix 4 Already Happened: Revisiting The Matrix Online By John Saavedra It was an odd game, but for me it was huge.” Just like with Star Wars today, when you look back on Myst, it was the first time you ever saw something with that level of detail. “I was 10 years old when Star Wars came out and, in my mind, I was the same age when I played Myst. Shane previously co-wrote the Sundance Special Jury Prize-winning documentary Being Elmo (2011). “For me, Myst was for games what Star Wars was for movies,” explains Philip Shane, a filmmaker who’s launched a Kickstarter for a documentary about the making of the PC classic. I remember the thrill of watching it run on the new PC my parents bought for me and my brothers in the mid-90s, marveling at the FMV elements combined with the detailed pre-rendered environments. “It was just another experiment along the scale of how to make things a little more sophisticated, and even within the game itself, you can see how we were expanding and building more cohesiveness into the worlds as we went.”ĭespite its humble origins, Myst was a huge deal for a lot of people in the ‘90s, including me. ![]() “I’d love to tell you we knew exactly what we were doing, but we didn’t,” Rand says. Instead, Myst tasked players with exploring its world and decrypting its story, eschewing combat for puzzles that challenged and engaged you but weren’t life-or-death ordeals. ![]() Indeed, there’s no dying in Myst, a revolutionary idea at a time when “Game Over”s were a staple in virtually every game on the market. “We wanted to add friction that would slow you down but we didn’t think that there were rules to video games necessarily, so we’ll pull out the dying and see if we could do it without that.” We felt like we were building a real world, and in a real world, you don’t just die and start over every five minutes.” Rand says of the initial conceit that led to the creation of the game. “I was more of a gamer than Robyn, but both of us settled with Myst on the idea that, well let’s not have people die and start over, because that irritated both of us. Myst is one of the most unlikely commercial success stories in gaming history, particularly due to the fact that the game was so strange, so notoriously difficult, and was made by such a small team (Cyan Worlds, founded by the Miller brothers in 1987). More than two decades after its release, there are even plans to turn the game into a movie and TV series. Released in 1993, the game was lauded by fans and critics alike, became a killer app for CD-ROM drives, and went on to become the best selling PC game ever ( over 6.3 million copies sold by 2000) until The Simsdethroned it in 2002. The game was called Myst, a point-and-click adventure full of infuriatingly difficult puzzles and driven by a twisted, fantastical story about a tragically dysfunctional family In 1991, two brothers-Rand and Robyn Miller-along with a handful of artists and engineers, set out to create a game unlike anything that had come before it, harnessing powerful new PC technology to immerse players in a fantastical island world inside a book. ![]() ![]() ![]() canis has been demonstrated in one laboratory study involving naturally infested animals conducted in South Africa. Among the isoxazolines, the efficacy of afoxolaner against D. Recently, a new class of insecticides/acaricides, the isoxazolines, demonstrated very good efficacy against many ectoparasites of dogs and cats: fleas and ticks, but also mites, including Otodectes cynotis, Sarcoptes scabiei, Lynxacarus radovskyi and Demodex canis. Many treatment protocols in the field include off label use of macrocyclic lactone, providing variable efficacy with potential for toxicity, especially in dogs carrying MDR-1 gene mutations. Only a few drugs and formulations, either topical or systemic, are registered. Generalised demodicosis is a very challenging disease to treat effectively. Alternatively, skin biopsy or hair plucks may also be performed. Suspicion of demodicosis based on clinical signs has to be confirmed by the detection of mites in deep skin scrapings. Secondary severe bacterial infections are frequent. In the case of generalised demodicosis, the affected areas are frequently erythematous, with comedones, hair loss, follicular papules to pustules, and scales. Recently, it has been proposed that localised demodicosis is characterised as no more than four lesions with a diameter of up to 2.5 cm, while canine generalised demodicosis is characterised by five or more affected areas, or by lesions covering an entire region of the body, and/or demodectic podal dermatitis involving two or more paws. It may evolve from the localised condition or occur spontaneously especially in older animals with underlying diseases. Generalised demodicosis is more severe and can even be fatal if a secondary bacterial infection develops. ![]() It can regress spontaneously without treatment. The localised form appears as patches of alopecia and mild erythema in limited areas of the body, usually in young dogs, although it may also affect older ones. Canine demodicosis is classically divided into two main clinical manifestations, i.e. The evolution from asymptomatic carriage to skin disease may be related to a particular cellular immunodeficiency allowing the multiplication of the mites, although the pathogenesis is not yet elucidated. Puppies acquire mites from their mother in the first days of their life through direct skin contact. Now I see what everyone has been talking about w/this author-brilliant!! This gave me all the Grimm fairytale vibes, & modern day Hansel & Gretel vibes. Regardless, how old you are there’s definitely a big chance that you’ll enjoy this! There was a modern touch to the story, and I feel like children would really love it. The story was creative and very original. I felt exceptionally proud to have understood what Sito and Kusa mihshi were before she got the chance to explain them! Of course I loved Lenore (always consider the animals as my favorite characters) I even liked Natacha! (Just a little bit) The story was really fantastically written. Loved Alex’s character and loved that there was a middle eastern touch with the appearance of Yasmin. You can tell just by reading this book that he has some pretty good ideas for a kid his age. Alex has a vast imagination and a love for everything horror. I didn’t expect the book to be scary since it was written for a young audience, but even though, the stories that Alex narrated did get the creepy factor across. The book might have been written for a middle grade audience, but I absolutely loved it! Witches, magic and scary stories all packed into one little book. The moment I read the synopsis on Goodreads I knew it was the kind of book for me. “After his family had finally fallen asleep, Alex slung the bagpack over his shoulder and snuck out of the apartment.” Thank you Edelweiss and Katherine Tegen books for sending me a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Overall, quite a creative and gripping middle grade horror story. And the plot twist at the end is better foreshadowed in the book. Another cool thing in the book that’s left out of the movie is the comparison of the storytelling protagonist to Scheherazade from One Thousand and One Nights, which is a good way to show what inspired this book in the first place, apart from the obvious Hansel and Gretel fairytale. Though it does make the stories in the movie a bit less impactful. I do get why the movie went with less creepy stories and more happy endings, to be able to reach a larger audience. The short stories are a lot better in the book. ![]() ![]() But the movie may have gone a bit too far in trying to simplify and improve upon the original story. ![]() And I have to admit, the reason why the protagonist wants to quit writing his scary stories is improved upon in the movie. The movie changed the protagonist’s back story quite drastically. Something I really don’t get to say as often as you might think. And I’m very happy to say that in this case, the book is better than the movie. It just lacked a little something and I was eager to find out if the original book managed to do it better. I actually bought this book because I recently saw the Netflix movie. That’s what drives this story and makes it so special. And it’s through him slowly becoming friends with the witch’s other captive Yasmin, and her acceptance of his quirky side, that he too learns to accept himself for who he is. The protagonist feels like a social outcast because of his fascination with scary stories. And the scary stories play a huge part in the story, though they are not the heart of this book. And now that he’s forced to write them, they don’t come as naturally as they did before. He wanted to stop writing scary stories altogether. The reason he snuck of the house when he met the witch, was to destroy his nightbooks. But his creativity and imagination are at their limit. The only reason she’s keeping him alive is because he – as a writer - can tell her many new scary bedtime stories. ![]() One day, while sneaking out of the house, he becomes imprisoned by a witch in her magical apartment. Alex is a young boy who writes down his bad dreams in his nightbooks, so those scary stories don’t keep him awake at night. ![]() ![]() However, gamers who are hoping to play Elden Ring or Diablo IV may be disappointed – at least with the current version of Fusion 13. To be fair, the high performance of Apple’s M1 and M2 processors means that your Windows virtual machines should be able to handle routine tasks such as web browsing or running the Windows version of Microsoft Office without too much trouble – and even at 4K resolution too. But, when running on Apple Silicon, Fusion only supports OpenGL for virtual machines that use Linux – with Windows support still in development. ![]() When running on Macs with Intel processors, Fusion provides hardware acceleration for 3D graphics in Windows games and design software that use DirectX and OpenGL 4.3. There are some technical limitations too. ![]() Fusion also has a tendency to throw a lot of complicated jargon at you too – such as “side channel mitigations” – which is the sort of thing that only corporate IT managers are likely to understand. Unfortunately, that’s not an easy task, as Windows 11 On Arm is primarily intended for sale to PC manufacturers, rather than individual users, so VMWare needs to make Fusion a bit more user-friendly for people who don’t understand the intricacies of Microsoft’s licensing policies. Parallels Desktop includes an option to automatically download and purchase Windows 11 On Arm when creating a new virtual machine, but VMware simply told us that it’s up to the user to buy a license from Microsoft. This means that the process of installing and running Windows 11 on Macs with Apple Silicon has some rather rough edges. These Macs need a special version of Windows 11 called Windows 11 On Arm, and VMware’s Michael Roy says that Fusion 13 is just “our first round of features for Windows 11 On Arm”. There’s a more limited range of features available when running Fusion 13 on Macs that have Apple Silicon processors such as the M1 or M2. Both programs also allow you to create virtual machines that run various versions of Linux too, which is a useful feature for many developers and students. And, crucially, you can run your Windows apps right alongside your existing Mac apps – rather than having to switch back and forth between Mac and Windows as you have to do when using Boot Camp on Intel Macs (and, of course, Boot Camp is no longer available on Macs with Apple Silicon at all). ![]() This virtual machine emulates the workings of a Windows PC, allowing you to install a full copy of Windows on the virtual machine and then run any Windows software or games that you need to use. In recent years, though, VMware has seemed to focus more on its high-end corporate products and, since the introduction of Apple Silicon in 2020, Fusion no longer really competes with the annual updates to Parallels Desktop anymore.īoth programs work in basically the same way, allowing you to create a virtual machine (VM) that runs on your Mac just like any other Mac application. Every time Apple released a new version of the macOS we would see Parallels and VMware release their own updates, and this competition was great for Mac users as it meant that both programs continued to offer new features and performance improvements every year. And, with a free version available for non-commercial use, it’s also the most affordable option for home users and students.įor many years Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion fought a long battle to produce the best virtualization software for Mac users who needed to run Windows software on their Macs. Support for Apple Silicon is still a work in progress, but Fusion 13 remains a good option for Mac users who need to run Windows 11 or Linux apps on their Macs.
